Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are the naturally occurring building blocks of our DNA, and when injected into the skin, harness our own regenerative cells (fibroblast) to produce gradual restoration of the skin over several weeks to months. Injected into the superficial skin layers, polynucleotides stimulate an increased production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, by up-regulating the fibroblast cells. This causes an improvement in tissue regeneration and restores the skin’s tone and elasticity. They also have an antioxidant and hydrating effect in addition to the bio-remodelling, therefore resulting in skin that looks and feels healthier.
Polynucleotides also stimulate tissue regeneration and have anti-inflammatory effects on the skin. Furthermore, they normalise the way our skin cells behave and can help reduce hyperpigmentation of the skin, e.g. sun damage.
Polynucleotides are derived from Salmon DNA before being purified so that they are 100% pure and chemically identical to those found us. Even so, due to the potential for allergic reaction if someone has an allergy to Salmon, this treatment would not be suitable for them.
Due to the superficial injection protocol with polynucleotides they can be used almost anywhere on the skin, including notoriously difficult to treat areas such as under the eyes, the neck, chest, hands or even scars.
What happens if I choose to proceed?
- To work most effectively Polynucleotide treatment is designed to be administered initially and a further 1-2 courses given 4 weeks apart.
- Subsequent treatments are typically administered approximately 6 monthly as needed.
If you chose to have Polynucleotide treatment, you will have:
Initial treatment:
- A face-to-face consultation with our doctor
- The opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns
- Photographs of the proposed treatment areas before treatment
- Numbing cream applied
- Your chosen Polynucleotide injections
- A recap of aftercare and the opportunity to ask any questions again
Treatment 4 weeks later (also 8 weeks later if required):
- Photographs of the treatment areas
- A further course of Polynucleotide injections
- A recap of aftercare and the opportunity to ask any questions again
Do the injections hurt?
Most patients find the injections cause minimal temporary discomfort, but this is minimised by using a very fine needle, superficial injections, and a local anaesthetic cream.
How will I look after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment there will be small blebs at the injections sites which usually subside within a few hours. Application of a cool pack for a few hours after treatment, arnica cream or an antihistamine can help reduce any swelling or bruising (very rare with this treatment). Results will start to be apparent around 3-4 weeks after treatment; you will be offered a review of your treatment at approximately this time. Due to the biological processes stimulated by this treatment, full results develop slowly over the months following treatment.
The ’down time’ with this treatment is very minimal, with most clients having no overt signs of treatment within hours of the treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
As detailed above, initially 2-3 treatments are recommended. Repeat treatments are usually administered every 6 months though this depends on you as an individual and your lifestyle - our doctor will discuss with you.
